Things had gone from bad to worse.

When I quietly climbed out of Easton’s bed, I was hoping to look out of his bedroom window and see that the city had finally gotten their shit together and treated the roads. But instead, I was met with a sight straight out of an apocalyptic movie.

Thick snowflakes pouring out of the sky.

The street signs decorated with long, pointy icicles.

And a snowdrift so damn high that I could barely make out my car sitting in Easton’s driveway.

This was a problem. But really, that word applied to more than just the weather aspect of things when I considered what Easton and I had done last night - twice.

The first time during the game could be chalked up to the raw, heated emotions that came with seeing each other again after being apart for months.

But the second time… the second time was different in a way I couldn’t explain; though I knew I’d soon have to find the words since I had a feeling Easton would want to talk about it, and it was clear I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere any time soon.

“Why Mama Nature? Why?” I cried internally as my phone began to buzz on top of my pile of clothes, the incoming phone call from my best friend, Tranae’, giving me a reason to leave the room and head downstairs while quietly answering, “Hey, Nae. What’s up?”

“Where you at, chica? I’ve been ringing your doorbell for like five minutes now.”

Shit.

Moving into the house next door to my bestie’s seemed like a great idea when I was fresh out of my marriage and in need of lots of girl time. But now, it was biting me in the ass, making it impossible for me to lie about my location when I answered, “Oh. I umm… I’m actually not at home right now.”

Not a lie, but not exactly the full truth either. And I felt terrible hearing the legitimate concern in Tranae’s tone once she asked, “Is everything okay? You didn’t get caught out in this blizzard, did you?”

“Well… sort of,” I told her, hoping to put her at ease once I added, “But don’t worry, I’m good.”

There was a long bout of silence, and I was getting ready to ask why she hadn’t just called first since that would’ve at least saved her a walk in the cold. But unfortunately, she beat me to the questioning with the one I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep avoiding.

“Kendra, where are you?”

“I’m at a friend’s,” I replied plainly until she pressed, “Kendra…”

“Okay, okay. I’m at Easton’s,” I whined before continuing with my very PG explanation. “He invited me to his Superbowl party last night, and I got stuck here because of the weather.”

Because my version of the story was missing a lot of key details, Tranae’ assumed, “Stuck at your ex’s with a house full of people? Yuck.”

“He’s not my ex, and there’s no one here but us,” I clarified, bracing myself for the moment she put two and two together.
